Newsman pens new book

The Road to Devotion, written by Cameron Kent of Channel 12 in Winston-Salem, is a new addition to our library.  The Forsyth County Library has chosen this novel as their “On the Same Page” featured book for 2011.

When Sarah Talton’s father suddenly passes away in the summer of 1860, she is left with a teenaged sister to care for and the family farm and slaves to oversee.   Determined to keep their land out of the hands of opportunists, she embraces her father’s iron will and hardhearted demeanor.  But when she falls in love with a French merchant who speaks no English and is given charge of a runaway slave who brings them both together, Sarah begins to question the values and beliefs instilled by her father and upheld by her Winston, NC, community.  When the Civil War looms, and community leaders clamor for blood and obedience, Sarah finds herself traveling a road that will lead either to her ruin or to her freedom.

Cameron Kent and his family attend Highand Presbyterian Church in W-S and are actively involved in Habitat for Humanity.

A review of library procedure

You may check out an item any time that the church office is open by signing the book card with your name and the current date and leaving the card in the basket on the library desk.

Someone is available to help you with the online catalog, with finding appropriate items, and with checkout procedures on Wednesdays from 5-5:45 p.m. and on Sundays from 9:15-9:45 a.m.

Items may be checked out for three weeks, with the option of renewing, when necessary.

Sunday service CDs are found on a board at the rear of the library and have a checkout time of one week.

• You can read the Biblical Recorder in the library. The current issue is displayed in the Periodicals section, which is on the shelves facing the entrance.

Resources

First Baptist members can browse a list of our library's resources online. There are more than 2,000 books, videos, audiobooks and kits listed.

Simply click this link to access the list. This service will:

Aid teachers in finding study resources

Help parents know what items are available for children

Assist readers in knowing what titles by favorite authors are in the collection

Provide ideas for meditative and recreational reading

This is not a complete catalog. For example, you will not be able to search for an item by subject as you can at the catalog station in the media center. But as you are viewing the list, you can search for a word within a title or an author's name by using the Find command of your browser. Under the Edit menu choose Find, then type one word for which you are searching. e.g. A search for "prayer" will show 56 titles that contain the word "prayer."

Library needs children's DVDs

Our library is in need of DVDs for children.  Most of our video resources are in VHS format, while most families are now using DVDs rather than tapes in their homes.  Donations to this collection would be welcomed.  You may either choose a church-appropriate title yourself or donate money for the library staff to use in buying DVDs.  We would greatly appreciate your help with this project.

New additions

Several titles have been added to the library collection recently:

  • On Grief and Grieving by Elisabeth Kubler-Ross.  A classic and inspirational book.
  • When Helping Hurts by Steve Corbett. New ways of looking at help for the poor.
  • Love Wins by Rob Bell, author of the NOOMA Series
  • Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand.  NY Times Best Seller.
  • A Billion Reasons Why by Kristin Billerbeck. Christian romances like this one are very popular in the library.
